Marriage

Marriage is the sexual union between a committed male and a committed female.  Marriage is something that was first instituted by Almighty God, therefore Almighty God must remain in a marriage in order for it to continue to work.

Marriage has to do with the 4 C's: Covenant, Companionship, Closeness and Communication.  If any one of these begins to decline in a marriage, it will fall apart.  But before we talk any more about marriage, lets discuss how marriage starts.

How Marriage Begins

In order to fully understand the institution of marriage, we have to go to the first known marriage, Adam and Eve.

  • Genesis 2:18-24  ~ And the LORD Almighty God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. 19) And out of the ground the LORD Almighty God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air, and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.  20) And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. 21) And the LORD Almighty God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22) And the rib, which the LORD Almighty God had taken from man made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23) And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.  24) Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.  25) And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

We see in the beginning that Eve was called Adam's wife.  A woman was created so that Adam would not be alone.  The LORD Almighty God created the animals but among them was not found a help meet for Adam.  Then the LORD created woman.  A wife is designed to be a help meet unto her husband.  A wife is suppose to be a comfort, companion and minister unto her husband.  A man should cleave unto his wife, not allowing anyone or anything to severe their relationship but allowing Almighty God to be in the midst of them.

  • Genesis 24:63-67 ~ And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.  64) And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel.  65) For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us?  And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself.  66) And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.  67) And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

As we can see in the scriptures that Isaac brought Rebekah into his mother's tent and took her.  Took her does not mean in the sense of bringing her somewhere.  Just above that it states that Isaac brought her into the tent, so "took" could not mean to bring her into the tent.  So what does that mean?  Lets look at Genesis 24:67 again.

  • And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

Isaac brought Rebekah into an intimate place.  A place of seclusion where they could be alone.  Then it says that he took her, and she became his wife.  In that sense the word took means to take in marriage.  How do you take someone in marriage?  According to what the Bible states, it was through sexual intercourse.  Basically, that passage is saying that Isaac brought Rebekah into an intimate place to have sexual intercourse.  (Rebekah was a virgin: Read Genesis 24)  Then look what happens after he had sexual intercourse with her.  She became his wife!

So many people believe that standing in front of a Minister or Justice of the Peace and saying "I do" is what makes you married.  Sexual Intercourse is what causes the two to become one flesh.  We are not saying don't obey the laws of the land.  What we want many to understand is that many people are married according to Almighty God and don't have a marriage license or others are married legally but not according to the WORD of Almighty God.  Once a male and female make the conscious decision they want to be together and the blood covenant has been made (she being a virgin.), there is no way out.  You are married.  Let's go into the scriptures and see what God has to say about this.

  • Deuteronomy 22:28-29 ~ If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; 29) Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.

So, if a man finds a virgin that has not been promised to someone else and they have consensual sexual intercourse that man is suppose to go to the father and give him fifty shekels of silver.  Many may wonder why the man has to give the damsels father money.  It's because she is the property of the father.  If the father is the one taking care of her she is considered his property.  When the man has laid with the damsel, transferrence of property has taken place.  Therefore the man must pay for her and she has rightly become his responsibility.

Verse 29 continues to say, "and she shall be his wife; because he hath humble her, he may not put her away all his days."  All the days of his life are owed to her.  When the Bible talks about putting away it means divorce.  Meaning he cannot divorce her.  All the days of his life belongs to her.
